Trailer Watch: George Lucas’s Red Tails

It’s been over two years since Red Tails started filming, and finally, we have a trailer. If you’re fine with all the CGI dogfighting (and I am), I think you’ll agree it’s a strong trailer, and it should make for a fun flick.

This fictionalized story of the Tuskegee Airmen is directed by Anthony Hemingway, from a screenplay by John Ridley (based on a story by executive producer George Lucas), and stars Bryan Cranston, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Daniela Rush, and Michael B. Jordan.

Here’s the official synopsis (via Twitch):

1944. As the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options – including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country – and the fate of the free world.

The film is currently targetting a January 2012 release.

It’s not that this doesn’t look good; it does.  In fact, I’d say it’s the first time Lucasfilm’s done CG in years that doesn’t look like the lighting’s slightly off. (Nutshell: Lucas’ CG constructs are always better lit than the real world they’re in, or the colors look a bit too washed out.  Or so I think.)

My question: will this movie bring anything new to the table HBO didn’t give us in 1995?  ‘The Tuskeegee Airmen’ was a very good movie with a very fine cast.  The most interesting part? Cuba Gooding, Jr. is in both films.

This looks like they ‘Pearl Harbor-ed’ the story.

I’d say one important thing is it brings it to an international audience. I know I sure as heck have never seen said HBO thing, nor do I have HBO, being from another country.

More than fair point; though I try to avoid it, I do occasionally forget there are readers outside the US.

I’d recommend ‘The Tuskeegee Airmen’ if you can find it on DVD, though.  Good movie.

I’ll have to look for it, it can be hard finding very specific television specials but I’m sure someone carries it online
