Luc Besson specializes in ridiculous action movies, so while there’s a lot of conceptual potential here, the Sherlocky (mind palace-esque) bits in the trailer make me feel like the actual movie will probably make me roll my eyes a lot. Even so, it looks pretty fun.
I do really wish filmmakers could let women badasses just be a badass more often without ever resorting to the using-their-feminine-wiles cliché… sigh
Here’s the synopsis:
Set in a futuristic world that is run by the mob, street gangs, drug addicts and corrupted cops, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a woman living in Taipei, Taiwan, 2069 AD, works as a drug mule for the mob. The drug she inadvertently takes goes into her system, changing her into a metahuman. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can’t feel pain and other discomforts.
Scarlett Johannson and Morgan Freeman stars in the Luc Besson flick, which hits theaters on August 8, 2014.
I’ll see it, ’cause I love me some Besson sci-fi action flics, but damn, that stupid 10% trope needs to die.
What do you want — for science fiction writers to actually read a book about science every now and then?
…
……
Yeah, it’s really not too much to ask, huh?
They don’t even have to work that hard man, just like, Google it and research for 2-5 minutes.
If you’re gonna pull a bull-shit macguffin, at least make it one that hasn’t been debunked for 50+ years.
Anything else would probably be better: “Something something calcium ions in her neurons are quantum entangled…” or w/e.
I bet this was not writers being stupid. It sounds like a case of directors and producers trying to dumb something down.
Usually I’d agree with you, but Luc Besson is the writer, director, and executive producer. :)
Oh.
Well.
It looks like fun, but I don’t know if I can pay money to see that degree of stupignorance.
Maybe she can use the “God Fist of the North Star” now!
I almost stopped the trailer right there.
I love Scarlett Johannson. :) You’re right GMA, it does look fun.
I think they went a bit too over-the-top. So she gets exposed to the drug, becomes a god, and solves all problems instantly. Meh.
“Too over-the-top”? Have you ever seen a Luc Besson movie before? :)
I HAVE, and “The Fifth Elements” remains one of the best movies ever made. Nevertheless. Trailers are always suspect, though.
Snort. “Limitless” was the only thing I could think of during that trailer. Will I still see it? Probably. But I have pretty mild expectations.
Looks like “Johnny Mnemonic” meets “Crank”.
Limitless meets Crank, maybe.
