Leonard Nimoy (1931–2015)

I was never a huge Star Trek fan, exactly. I love some of the early episodes, and I think Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. I enjoyed Star Trek III and IV, too, for what they were. I read a bunch of the DC Comics Star Trek stuff at that time, because my brother bought them. And I watched a bit of the Next Generation and then fell off the wagon. Kirk and Spock were my Star Trek, and the Star Trek 2–4 “era” was its peak for me, warts and all, because that’s the “era” that really hooked me. And really, for me, it was all about Wrath of Khan.

In addition to playing Mr. Spock, of course, Leonard Nimoy did a lot of other things. He was on Mission: Impossible. He directed a few movies (Three Men and a Baby!). He was a photographer. He was the voice of Civilization IV. But one thing I really loved of his was Standby: Lights, Camera, Action, on Nickelodeon from 1982–1987, which provided a behind the scenes look at movies like Star Trek III, Return of the Jedi, 2010, and more. Nimoy hosted and occasionally interviewed guests like George Lucas. As a budding film nerd in the pre-Internet Dark Ages, behind the scenes specials like Standby: Lights, Camera, Action were hard to come by. I ate that show up.

Anyway, as you’re undoubtedly aware by now, Leonard Nimoy passed away on the 27th. As cartoonists do when they’re sad about these kinds of things, I drew a picture:

Somerville Theatre Midnight Specials film series

Patreon backers got an early look at this, but one of the freelance projects I’ve done recently is movie-themed, and I wanted to share it with you. It’s a poster for the Somerville Theatre’s upcoming Midnight Specials film series. (In Somerville, Mass.)

So if you’re in that area, definitely check out this film series starting later this month. And if you’re not, just dig on this poster I made for them. It was a hell of a lot of fun to do:

If you’d like to buy one of these, the theater — not me — is planning to sell 11″x17″ posters for $14 and 24″x36″ posters for $30. (These are short, custom print runs, hence the premium cost.) Postage is included (for those of you hailing from the United States). Contact Ian Judge of FEI Theatres (ijudge at feitheatres.com) for more information!

And if you’re a theater manager interested in commissioning something like this for your theater, definitely shoot me an e-mail! (The “Contact Gordon” link in the footer is your friend.)

Turtle Power (and other things)

I’ve posted these before at Patreon and other sites around the Interwebs, but in honor of Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman’s latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer, here they are all together for the first time to use as avatars and profile pics or whatever!

If you’d like to see a favorite character drawn like this, let me know below — and become a Patreon patron at the $3 level or higher to get access to the Activity Stream! I hope to do another one of these soon. Beyond bonus comics, eBooks, drawings like these, you get discounts on stuff from the Multiplex Store, as well (books, commissions, etc.).

I’ve been in a minor financial bind lately, and so I’ve been forced to take on some freelance work when I would rather be updating three times a week for the summer (as I’ve done four out of the last six weeks)! I’ve posted a few bonus comics from Book Three, as well.

If you’d like more Multiplex, too, head over the Patreon today. They recently announced some of their upcoming plans, and I think what they have in store will help me make it an even cooler place for Multiplex fans.

I’ve been drawing Turtles, I guess. Here’s Leonardo.

leonardo

Because of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer and working on #900 over the last week, I decided to draw Donatello (because he’s the best) for the Patreon backers’ Activity Stream… and then I drew Raphael (because he’s cool but rude)… and by that point I figured I should probably draw all of them, so Michelangelo went up there last night, and here’s Leonardo for everybody to see.

I’m not sure if I’ll draw more characters from the Turtleverse (maybe if enough people ask nicely), but I’ll definitely draw more stuff and share them with you guys either here or there. Feel free to use this as a social media avatar or anything else non-commercial. (I’m using Donatello as my own Twitter avatar lately!)
