Trailer Watch: Guy Pearce in The Rover

I was absolutely mesmerized by writer-director David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom, and this trailer for his follow-up, The Rover, looks incredibly intense, as well.

The film follows Pearce as he hunts down the gang that stole his car with the help of a wounded man (Robert Pattinson) left behind at the scene.

The film comes out on June 13 in the US, almost certainly in limited release. It was written by Michôd from a story by Michôd and Joel Edgerton, who starred in Animal Kingdom (and Warrior, as well). The film also stars Scoot McNairy (Killing Them Softly).

Trailer Watch: Zhang Yimou’s Coming Home

…or “Homecoming” as it’s called in the trailer, but I’m guessing they changed it because “homecoming” has different connotations here in the States. It amounts to the same thing, of course.

Zhang Yimou is a favorite of mine, though I prefer his smaller, heart-achingly human films like Happy Times and Not One Less to his emotionally colder forays into larger-scale cinema (Hero notwithstanding, because that movie is awesome). Incidentally, Yimou was almost going to be the subject of Jason and Lydia’s conversation in Multiplex #896, but Wong Kar-wai fit better, and I realized that I hadn’t seen enough of Yimou’s most recent films.

Anyway. Coming Home has no domestic release date yet, but it should premiere at Cannes in May, followed by its Chinese release.

In the film, Gong Li reunites with Yimou for the first time since 2006’s Curse of the Golden Flower). Chen Daoming stars as a Chinese dissident “who is forced into a marriage, flees to America and is sent to a labor camp when he returns to China.” (via The Playlist)

Trailer Watch: A Long Way Down

A Long Way Down by is the latest film adaptation of one of Nick Hornby’s books. This time, it’s adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne and directed by Pascal Chaumeil, a French director probably best known in the States for Heart Breaker with Patrick Dempsey.

The film centers around four people who meet by chance, when they all wind up on the roof of a skyscraper on New Year’s Eve intending to kill themselves, and deeply meaningful hilarity presumably ensues. Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots star as the four strangers, with Rosamund Pike (who also appeared in the Hornby-scripted An Education) and Sam Neill as Poots’s father.

It all looks a little cutesy here in the trailer, but presumably there are some darker moments waiting, unadvertised, within.

The film opens in the UK in March; there is no US release date yet.

Trailer Watch: Daniel Radcliffe in Kill Your Darlings

I just posted a trailer for a flick with Tom Felton, so I guess it’s only fitting to post one with Daniel Radcliffe now. The erstwhile Harry Potter stars as Allen Ginsberg in a “based on a true story” tale of David Kammerer’s murder by Lucien Carr (in 1944). Rounding out the cast are Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Lucien Carr, Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under) as David Kammerer, Jack Huston (Richard Harrow on Boardwalk Empire) as Jack Kerouac, and Ben Foster as William S. Burroughs.

Director John Krokidas directs from a script he co-wrote with Austin Bunn. The film opens on October 16th in New York and LA; it’ll expand from there… although how much depends on how well it does, of course.
