Trailer Watch: Green Lantern

Courtesy of Yahoo! Movies comes a new trailer for Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan — this time featuring some narration by Rush (as Green Lantern Tomar-Re).

The costumes and the CG still don’t feel quite right to me, but it feels suitably… well… epic. It looks good, anyway, and I’ll definitely be there on June 17th. What do you think?

Actually, they do feel right to me – the costumes are, I believe, almost entirely CG, and are supposed to have a look like they were ‘built’ out of the ring energy.  The scene with Tomar-Re (the beaked guy voiced by Geoffrey Rush, for those not knowing and recognizing his voice) talking about the ring’s abilities, showing things moving and flowing? It’s what I was thinking it should look like.

I love the fact that Sinestro isn’t the bad guy, despite his place in the stories.

I think there’s still a lot of uncanny-valley in the members of the Corps, but if you know the comics, there’s a number that  might look CG no matter what.

I think they have the core ideas down, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

    • I like the idea behind the CG costumes, not so much the execution of them. But they’ve moved the costume designs in the right direction since they first started leaking images (they had nearly no black before, just darker greens).

But there are some details that don’t sit right with me: the footies on Hal look silly, as do the muscle-like striations on his costume. But Sinestro’s looks really good.

Anyway, the costume isn’t a big deal, really. It’s whether or not he’s going to have anything to do at the end of the movie with the design of Parallax looking the way it does.

They did recently throw some more money at it to improve the CGI, maybe by the time it comes out it’ll look better.

  3. Mmm, I like the comic, but this didn’t really make me feel an urge to see it. More like watching it on DVD, the CG almost looks like A Sound of Thunder, I hope it’s improved when it comes out.
