Trailer Watch: What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music

As a cartoonist, I’m always interested in explorations of creative people and the creative process. I especially enjoyed It Might Get Loud and if I remember correctly, listed it as my favorite film of 2009 somewhere or another. What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music looks like a completely different approach from It Might Get Loud, but it is an upcoming documentary from Red Bull Music and director Ralf Schmerberg (Problema). Shot at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy in New York, the film features Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, James Murphy and more talking about music and life and shit like that.

It looks pretty interesting as a documentary, but another really interesting thing about it is how they’re distributing it: it will be free at http://redbullmusicacademy.com on February 18. (via /Film)

Trailer Watch: A Long Way Down

A Long Way Down by is the latest film adaptation of one of Nick Hornby’s books. This time, it’s adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne and directed by Pascal Chaumeil, a French director probably best known in the States for Heart Breaker with Patrick Dempsey.

The film centers around four people who meet by chance, when they all wind up on the roof of a skyscraper on New Year’s Eve intending to kill themselves, and deeply meaningful hilarity presumably ensues. Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots star as the four strangers, with Rosamund Pike (who also appeared in the Hornby-scripted An Education) and Sam Neill as Poots’s father.

It all looks a little cutesy here in the trailer, but presumably there are some darker moments waiting, unadvertised, within.

The film opens in the UK in March; there is no US release date yet.

Trailer Watch: Jean-Claude Van Damme in Welcome to the Jungle

This looks so stupid. Also funny. Maybe a little racist. But also really funny.

Rob Meltzer’s Welcome to the Jungle stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Adam Brody, Kristen Schaal, Dennis Haysbert (the Allstate dude), and more. It hits theaters and on demand on the February 7, 2014.

Trailer Watch: Karen Gillan and Katee Sackhoff get scary in Oculus

Director Mike Flannigan’s Oculus premiered at TIFF last year, and it will get a US release this April.

Here’s the plot synopsis (via Twitch):

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…
