Trailer Watch: Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises TIFF trailer

From the Toronto International Film Festival YouTube comes a trailer for Hayao Miyazaki’s next, The Wind Rises, a “decade-spanning epic… inspired by the true stories of Jiro Horikoshi, visionary designer of one the most beautiful airplanes in history—the famed Zero fighter—and the poet Tatsuo Hori, whose verses are brought to life by the vivid animation of Studio Ghibli.”

The trailer is a thing of beauty, and while it’s been online for a little while, this one has subtitles for those of us who don’t know Japanese.

The film premieres at TIFF next month, naturally. There is no regular theatrical release date yet, and with the subject matter, I wouldn’t hold my breath unless an Academy Award nomination gets it some attention. But who knows?

Trailer Watch: Spike Jonze’s Her

My brother said it best on the Twitters: “if you told me yesterday I’d be excited to see a movie about a guy who falls in love with his phone I would have said you’re crazy”… And, seriously: that’s the premise: Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with Siri (more or less). But Her looks surprisingly engaging, even with that weird premise.

Being John Malkovich and Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze wrote and directs Her, which comes out on November 20, 2013. Just shy of the major Oscarbait dumping grounds, but close enough that the distributor thinks it might be a contender for something.

Scarlett Johansson plays his phone, while Amy Adams and Rooney Mara round out the cast.

Trailer Watch: Thor: The Dark World trailer 2

This is a couple of days old, but a second trailer for Thor: The Dark World is up, and while Natalie Portman is still out of place, but this looks a pretty solid step up from the first one.

I think Jane’s gonna bite it in this movie, though. What about you? (Her dying would have worked better if she were in The Avengers, which I’d bet was the original plan, until scheduling issues or whatever had them replace Port with Stellan Skarsgård. Just a guess, though.)

Updated Multiplex Store

I’m in the process of rebuilding the Multiplex Store. It’s still a little plain, but that will be an ongoing process. Anyway, I think everything works correctly.

There are a few nice things about the new design: a more streamlined checkout page, a responsive design, so that if you’re on a phone, it should fit your screen. (My developer Jelly and I are working on a responsive redesign for the regular Multiplex website, too, but that’s a few months off. Mostly him, at this point.)

In the interest of testing things out, I need some customers!

Here is a coupon for $1.99 off any eBook with any purchase. So you can buy a book and get a free eBook, or buy one eBook and get a second one for free, or just get $1.99 off one of the eBook sets, whatever.

Because an account is required for eBook purchases, you will need to be logged in, so if you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to create one. At checkout, enter the code newstore and it’ll take $1.99 off your total.

If you run into any issues, please leave a comment here or shoot me an e-mail!
